The 2016 Malibu Stakes is on for Boxing Day, and it poses the last chance for three-year-olds to secure a grade-I victory. Who’s up for the challenge?
Mind Your Biscuits will head to the last big race of the calendar year to try and go out on a win. The three-year-old colt missed winning the Breeders’ Cup Sprint by placing second but remains amongst the top choices on the board early on. It should only be a matter of time before Mind Your Biscuits earns a grade-I victory, but can he do it prior to the new year?
Standing in his way are a handful of contenders who all have some relative worth. Ten Blessings is the actual favorite at 3/1 because of some bustling training runs that aren’t backed by any significant performances in stakes races. The Bob Baffert trainee will be joined by stable mates Jazzy Times at 8/1 and Mor Spirit at 6/1.
This could very well be a run for redemption for Mor Spirit, who looked incredibly strong on the Road to the Kentucky Derby earlier this year before placing 10th at the opening leg of the Triple Crown. We haven’t seen much of Mor Spirit since then, but those who remember his upstart performances will have a hard time turning away from his potentially profitable odds this weekend at the 2016 Malibu Stakes.
Another lead horse is Sharp Azteca, who had a strong summer that started with a win at the Pat Day Mile on Belmont Day and ended with a fourth place finish at the Super Derby Prelude. He’s had most of the fall off to rest and recover, so this looks like a final tune-up before his connections set his 2017 campaign in motion. If all goes well, we will be seeing plenty of Sharp Azteca in the near future.
Semper Fortis, Who’s Out, Awesome Banner and Horse Greedy round out the remainder of the 2016 Malibu Stakes Field.
