After a rip roaring Friday evening, we’re on to the Saturday races in the world championships hosted by Del mar. The 2017 Breeders’ Cup Day 2 results are listed below with race videos.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies – Caledonia Road (15/1)

Moonshine Memories was the 2/1 favorite, and led most of the way with Alluring Star, an 8/1 outsider. It was a strong pace and looked to be a bitter fight between two of the top entrants, but Moonshine Memories faded out of the final corner and seemed to give up. She would finish 7th overall and watch helplessly as Caledonia Road rallied from the outside to devour the field and catch Alluring Star to win cleanly.

Caledonia Road paid out a whopping $36.60, $15.40 and $9.80 across the board with the first major upset in 2017 Breeders’ Cup Day 2 results. Alluring Star was worth $10.40 and $7.20 in second while Blonde Bomber went from last to third to pay out $15.20 as a massive longshot.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint – Stormy Liberal (30/1)

The longshots would not be denied again in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Pure Sensation held the lead for much of the race, with Lady Aurelia nowhere to be seen as the 5/2 favorite. in the final moments of the breathtaking race, Richard’s Boy looked to be clear and away but he was caught by Stormy Liberal with just heartbeats left.

Stormy Liberal delivered a whopping $62.40, $26.60 and $15.60 in a devastating upset. Richard’s Boy delivered $13.00 and $7.00 in second place while Disco Partner was worth $4.60 to show.

This was a massive setback for Lady Aurelia, who went off at a 4/5 premium and never really factored in the race. She would finish 10th overall in one of the more surprising 2017 Breeders’ Cup Day 2 results.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint – Bar of Gold 

A nearly full field too charge of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint in what promised to be one of the mre competitive races. Unique Bella led the field as an even money favorite but faded unexpectantly around the corner. This gave way to three longshots who dueled it out bravely down the homestretch.

Bar of Gold won by a nose and sent tickets flying with a $135.40, $44.20 and $21.60 payout across the board as a massive 67/1 longshot. She was followed by Ami’s Messa who was worth $16.20 and $11.00 in second place at 18/1 while fan favorite Carina Mia delivered $11.00 in third place.

The win by Bar of Gold is one of the highest $2 payouts in Breeders’ Cup history.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf – Wuheida (11/1)

The longshots kept delivering in the Filly & Mare Turf. Lady Eli was supposed to be the no-brainer bet in this race, but never factored in as she yielded no return when asked to run. Instead it was Wuheida who sat patiently in second before overtaking pace setting Zipessa to win the race by two lengths.

Wuheida paid out a handsome return of $24.40, $12.40 and $8.60. Rhododendron paid $9.40 and $6.80 while Cambodio rallied for third with 11/1 odds that were worth $6.80 to show.

Lady Eli trailed all the way to 7th and never showed interest.

2017 Breeders Cup Sprint – Roy H (9/2)

Roy H may have taken a long time to get to a winner’s circle, but the five-year-old gelding’s time has arrived. The 9/2 second choice came through after catching Imperial Hint down the stretch. Defrong, who went off as the 7/5 favorite was never able to impact the race in a meaningful way.

The winner was worth $11.80, $5.00 and $3.60 while Imperial Hint gave back $5.20 and $4.00. Mind Your Biscuits fought hard to take third and was worth $4.40. Defrong finished way back in 6th continuing a tough sled for the favorites in 2017 Breeders’ Cup Day 2 results.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Mile – World Approval (5/2)

Midnight Storm took the field out in a bullet :22.30 over the first quarter mile and the furious pace on a fast track made the Breeders’ Cup Mile an absolute sight to behold. Ribchester and World Approval, the two favorites, sat patiently in the middle of the pack. Stretching hard and fast in the final moments over the turf, World Approval was a cut above his competition and dragged a tightly woven pack across the line behind him.

World Approval seized the lead to win and was worth $7.40, $4.40 and $3.80 while a gritty performance from Lancaster Bomber saw him return $13.80 and $8.00 in second place. Blackjackcat took third for $7.40 to show.

It was a miserable day for Ribchester, a 7/2 preference who never found his footing and got left behind when the pace simmered to a mad boil early on.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile – Good Magic (11/1)

An unexpected winner has come through in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, one of the most important races in the early goings of the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Good Magic took down Bolt d’Oro and his rivals as an outsider in the books to win by a commanding 4 1/2 lengths. The win now moves the colt in to the upper echelon of horses to watch for the Triple Crown.

Good Magic delivered $25.00, $9.40 and $5.60 with the upset victory. Solimini was worth $8.40 and $4.40 in second as he clung on to hope down the stretch to fend off Bolt d’Oro who placed third with a $2.60 return on heavy 3/5 odds.

Givemeaminit, The Tabulator, Hollywood Star and Firenze Fire rounded out the top seven.

2017 Breeders’ Cup Turf – Talismanic (14/1)

As expected, defending champion Highland Reel was the horse to beat as the 7/5 favorite with Beach Patrol only slightly behind as a 3/1 second choice. Both stayed the pace set by 22/1 longshot Oscar Performance. Right on their heels, however, was Talismanic alongside Hunt, another 35/1 longshot.

When the fever pitch hit, it was Highland Reel who showed power first off with Beach Patrol flanking along the outside. What neither expected, however, was Talismanic blowing up their fortunes by stealing the race as he thundered up the middle to post a massive upset in 2017 Breeders’ Cup Day 2 results.

Talismanic was worth $30.20 with the win. Beach Patrol was second at $4.00 and $3.00 while Highland Reel finished third and paid back $3.40.

Breeders’ Cup Classic – Gun Runner (2/1)

There was every reason to be excited about the showdown for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Defending champion Arrogate was looking to re-assert his dominance and go out as the first $20 million winner in the sport’s history. Meanwhile Gun Runner had ripped apart the summer schedule and become the world’s best racehorse according to the rankings. West Coast and Collected loomed as well.

In other words there were many reasons to expect the unexpected in 2017 Breeders’ Cup Day 2 results, but Gun Runner came through with a masterful performance. Going off as a 2/1 second choice, Gun Runner led the way and set fractions of 22:50 and :46.31 while establishing a torrid pace.

Arrogate seemed to be asked for more heading in to the second turn, but was nearly nine lengths back of the front. Far out in front Gun Runner and Collected continued their battle down the homestretch, but it the top racehorse in the world completely validated himself by dusting his foe and crossing the wire first to win the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic.

The final time was 2:01.29 which is moderate by historical comparison.

With the victory, Gun Runner delivered $6.80, $4.40 and $3.20 as a 2/1 favorite. Collected held on for second at 5/1 while 4/1 third choice West Coast ran as expected. War Story slid in at fourth while Arrogate and Gunnevera came in fifth and sixth.

This was a crushing blow to Arrogate, who has petered out all summer long and finally had the bottom fall out. However, this is the ascension that many expected out of Gun Runner who won at 1 1/4 miles for the first time in his career. He chose quite the stage to notch this milestone victory.
