2017 Remsen Features Avery Island

2017 Remsen Stakes preview
Avery Island is the 2017 Remsen Stakes favorite

Since handedly winning the Nashua, Avery Island has quietly positioned himself as one of the two-year-old colts to watch on the upcoming 2018 Kentucky Derby trail. In an effort to solidify his case, the Kiaran McLaughlin trainee will next attempt to win the 2017 Remsen Stakes which remains one of the most notable prep races for the Triple Crown. He will have some stiff competition, but at 3/1 he remains the optimal choice.

His biggest challenger according the oddsmakers will be Alkhaatam who is holding 7/2 odds of his own. The two-year-old out of Chad Brown’s stable seems like a curious decision given that he’s only placed third in a maiden special weight out of Belmont Park, but all of the news regarding his training since then has been top level. These horses are all very young competitors. It’s not unheard of for someone to steal the show.

Also in the mix is Catholic Boy, a 5/1 More Than Ready colt who will make his dirt debut in the 2017 Remsen Stakes. He was last out finishing fourth in the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf and that performance was enough to warrant a surface change. The fact remains that dirt overall is less forgiving than turf, and the breakout speed that Catholic Boy has shown prior may not be as convincing.

Perhaps the best outsider to take is Vouch who is holding 6/1 odds on the morning line. While a complete dark horse, reports about his speed and discipline have been intriguing to say the least. He shares odds with Triple Dog Dare who placed second at a maiden special weight in his competitive debut.

Rounding out the 2017 Remsen are Biblical, VIP Code, Tap Rap Strike, Millionaire Runner and Bandito.

Betting two-year-old competitions of this caliber are a tough proposition but Avery Island has done more than enough to warrant at least a win play. If you are looking for a lotto ticket, then Vouch is an itch worth scratching. Alkhaatam is worth a place bet at most.

The 201y7 Remsen offers a $750,000 purse and a 10-4-2-1 point split for the prep race circuit.
