Fans of the 2016 Triple Crown can rejoice. Danzing Candy is back. The front-running speedster made a splash in the prep race circuit during a wild run that included a win in the 2016 San Felipe with a runner-up finish in the Santa Anita Derby. An unfortunate lack of endurance led to him falling from 1st to 15th in the Kentucky Derby itself, but a lengthy offseason has given the now four-year-old colt a chance to properly recover. He is now the favorite in the 2017 San Carlos Stakes this weekend.
Bob Baffert has predesigned plans for his star runner, that have been built around his recent wins in an allowance and at the Lone Star Handicap. The Breeders’ Cup is the long game, but Baffert has to get his colt there first. “I’m trying to manage these horses the best I can. This came up and it looked like it would be a good spot, even though he’s in the No. 1 hole. But I think he’s good.”
Ransom the Moon will be the biggest threat at 5/2 in the 2017 San Carlos after winning the Kona Gold Stakes. Kobe’s Back, who finished fourth in the Kona Gold, is in at 9/2. Coastline is the longsohot with 8/1 odds of his own while Cool Cowby returns stateside after a fifth place finish in the Dubai Gold Shaheen as a 6/1 outside shot.
Should he live up to expectation this coming weekend, Danzing Candy will likely target the Pat O’Brien Stakes on August 26th to qualify for the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. To be frank, the longer distances don’t suit Danzing Candy, but he’s shown the competitive spirit and the pace to really shine in the shorter sprint events. He’s worth keeping tabs on this summer.
