This is the weekend that we’ve all been waiting for, and one of the sport’s biggest broadcasting partners will be putting on a record five-hour show to celebrate. 2018 Kentucky Derby coverage on NBC is going to start at 2:30pm ET and run all the way until the conclusion of the event at 7:30pm ET. At the helm as always will be Bob Costas.
Above and beyond the main card, NBC will broadcast the 144th Kentucky Oaks on Friday evening on their affiliate channel NBCSN (sports network) for an additional five hours. The undercard for derby day begins at 12pm on the same channel before switching over to the main NBC for the remainder of the 144th Kentucky Derby.

Saturday, May 5th – 2018 Kentucky Derby Undercard – NBCSN (12pm – 2:30pm ET)

NBC has long been a friend of thoroughbred racing, with Costas in particular having a pivotal impact on the exponential growth of the sport’s popularity. In fact, the mainstream appeal of the derby can be traced back to NBC taking back broadcasting rights from CBS, who televised their final derby in 1999. Since 2000, the total action, the advent of the internet and a genuine push froM NBC have helped propel the Kentucky Derby in to the mainstream.
The use of an aerial camera that will track action down the backstretch is going to be a new addition to 2018 Kentucky Derby coverage. They will also be using over 50 additional cameras to capture all the exciting action throughout the day. As is popular in other sports, jockeys will be “mic’d up” as well.
All told, the money spent on developing the spectacle of the Triple Crown is very well spent. You can catch up to 28 hours of 2018 Kentucky Derby coverage on NBC, NBC Sports Network and the TwinspiresTV app which is available through the mobile and desktop platforms.
You can use the NBC channel finder to determine the station you should tune in to when the 144th Kentucky Derby begins on Saturday, May 5th.
