Conditions like we’ve never seen produced 2018 Preakness results that we almost never expected. Justify emerged victorious through a fog smothered track to score a narrow, nail biting win. But the race didn’t unfold the way anyone anticipated.
Going off as a heavy 1/5 favorite, Justify and Good Magic broke through a thick, white fog that literally shrouded the Pimlico track in a truly surreal fashion. The camera angles changed routinely, with the final turn even being shown from behind the horses because it was the only way to get a view. Those in the grandstands were unable to see much of the actual race.
One thing was apparent from the early going. Good Magic was going to push Justify to his limits to try and earn an upset in 2018 Preakness results. The two exploded out of the gates, challenging one another through fractions of :23.11, :47.19, and 1:11.42. Around the second turn, it looked like Justify was able to dispatch of his rival but that was just due to an unusual camera angle.
Justify was in fact just a few strides ahead of his competition, and there was a lot of competition nipping at his heels. The roller coaster was a bumpy ride down the homestretch as Justify looked to be away, but as he closed in on the wire, Bravazo came soaring from the outside to fall just a half-length short of upsetting the 2018 Preakness results with a massive effort. Tenfold also came streaming from the clouds to catch a startled Good Magic in the final second, dropping the second favorite to fourth.
The remainder of the 2018 Preakness results saw Lone Sailor, Sporting Chance, Diamond King and Quip rounded out the rest of the order.
Bob Baffert secured his record tying seventh victory with Justify’s win but gave all the credit in the world to Good Magic.
“That was a nail-biter,” Baffert said. “They put it to us. That was a good horse, Good Magic, and it was like they had their own private match race. Somebody had to give, and I’m glad it wasn’t us. He had to really work for it. Good Magic, I tip my hat to him. He made us really work. He’s a really good horse.”
The early battle between Good Magic and Justify wasn’t optimal for either, and usually a tilt that engaged wears down both horses to the point that another contender breaks through. That’s exactly what almost happened, and the fact that Tenfold was able to close in to steal third had Chad Brown irate. “Unfortunately, our horse took the worst of it being on the fence and getting pressed the whole way. He’s not a horse that runs on the lead, so I’m pretty disappointed. He didn’t give up. I know this horse very well, and he’s not a horse to be on the lead. No way.”
And now, with the 2018 Preakness results in our rearview after a sloppy Kentucky Derby, one other element has emerged from fog blanketed Pimlico – the potential of a Triple Crown champion. The 2018 Belmont Stakes runs on Saturday, June 9th.
