Fading the Favorite Nyquist at the Preakness
Nyquist is the heavy favorite and consensus choice of many to win the 141st running of the Preakness Stakes Saturday. But in a race that has little return with seemingly few horses that can challenge Nyquist, the second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico becomes an uneventful wagering opportunity. But stranger things have happened, and with the horses and trainers preparing for a wet track at the Preakness, pace and speed and a sloppy surface with likely determine the winner.
Should Nyquist win as many expect, his payout will be less than last year’s Preakness winner and Triple Crown champion American Pharoah, who closed less than even money (0.90-1) and paid $3.80 to win on a $2 wager, and $3.40 to place with $2.80 to show. The best payout in the 8-horse field turned out to be the $2 exacta, which paid $124.40 when 28-1 long shot Tale of rallied in the final 1/16 to get up for second; a full seven lengths behind winner American Pharoah. The $2 trifecta paid $985 when 12-1 Divining Rod finished third.
If you’re set on betting Nyquist, you may want to bet the Preakness like a trader and wager on him to place (second). You win if he finishes first or second. A $2 place bet has paid $2.70 on average for the Preakness’ returning favorites off a Kentucky Derby win. Nyquist is the ninth post-time favorite to win the Kentucky Derby in the last 20 years. Seven of the eight Derby champs before him finished first or second in the Preakness Stakes. The only one that fell short was Orb in 2013,
If you’re looking for a decent score, look towards the long shots to hit the board in the exotics behind Nyquist. Or if you’re willing to take a stand against Nyquist on top, consider second and third choice Exaggerator and Stradivari as the winner on top with the other and Nyquist combined with a few long shots in your exotic wagering. That may be the ‘odd’ wagering choice to many, but those are the odd numbers of interest.
