Bolt d’Oro will be at Belmont Park on June 9th, but it won’t be to try and contend with Justify. After a worrying 12th place finish in the Kentucky Derby that saw his stock as a three-year-old hit an all-time low, his connections at Spendthrift Farms along with Mick Ruis have instead pointed the highly coveted, future stallion to the 2018 Met Mile.
“I thought the horse looked amazing,” noted Mark Toothaker of Spendthrift Farms. “He just had an easy half mile last week where he just had a chance to stretch his legs, and today Mick wanted to give him something a lot more serious and give him a target.
Certainly, after a tumultuous run through the Triple Crown prep season, Toothaker enjoyed the sight of Bolt d’Oro who, “just relaxed behind his target. It was a strong work with a big gallop out. I thought he looked tremendous. He got across the ground great and this ought to set him up in great shape.”
The 2018 Met Mile is an ideal choice for Bolt d’Oro given his current trajectory. It’s often a landing spot for noted competitors that fall just outside the top tier. Mor Spirit, Frosted, Honor Code, Palace Malice, Shackelford, Tizway and Quality Road are the last seven winners of the prestigious race. Two of those are Preakness winners. This is a race that further defines the potential of a stallion.
“I think it is the perfect fit,” Toothaker continued. “I know Mick may want to try him back out at one and a quarter as the year progresses and give him another shot at that, but right now it really looks like the mile is right in his wheelhouse.”
The 2018 Met Mile will run on Belmont day which is June 9th as part of a stacked undercard for the 2018 Belmont Stakes. Other notable runners like Mind Your Biscuits, McCraken, Patch and Awesome Slew are also slated as probables for the race.
