California Chrome leads the Breeders’ Cup Classic contenders field in 2016.

California Chrome will face plenty of opposition in this year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic. The Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In series has formed a veteran group of horses pointed towards the Classic, which includes California Chrome, Frosted, Hoppertunity and Melatonin. The Breeders’ Cup has also listed the talents of Arrogate, Effinex, Gun Runner, Nyquist, Shaman Ghost and Win the Space as probable contenders.

Nyquist brings bragging rights for his 2015 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile victory and winning the Kentucky Derby. Arrogate bolted onto the scene setting a new track record for the Travers Stakes while finishing in the money in all lifetime starts prior to the Travers. Melatonin and Hoppertuntiy have both had strong success at Santa Anita in 2016. With the Breeders’ Cup being hosted by Santa Anita in California in 2016, their graded stakes finishes will be a factor. Frosted won the Whitney and Met Mile, but could point towards the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.

Just as likely to stir conversation is the possibly stronger field in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Breeders’ Cup Challenge winners Stellar Wind, I’m a Chatterbox, Cavorting and Corona Del Inca are enough to raise eyebrows. That is, until the other Distaff probable’s are mentioned. The field could round out with Beholder, Curalina, Forever Unbridled, Paid Up Subscriber and Songbird.

Songbird and Beholder meeting in the Distaff will be a spectacle, but the challenge is a field of super fillies and mares to try and fend off. Stellar Wind is on a roll with back-to-back graded stakes wins in California. East Coast probable runner Cavorting has even more first place graded stakes finishes for the year at 3 wins. The talent is strong here.

All races on the Breeders’ Cup card are full of talent and excitement, but the third to quickly touch on is the Turf. The turf has all sexes and ages represented, including world travelers. Foreign competitors Flintshire, Found, Highland Reel, Ectot, Erupt, Dartmouth, Ulysses and So Mi Dar will continue a strong showing of international flair. North American competitors include fan favorite The Pizza Man, Ashleyluvssuger, Da Big Hoss, World Approval, Texas Ryano and Twilight Eclipse.
