The sport of Thoroughbred horse racing lost one of its greats this week.Inside Information, the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner, died at the age of 26 due to old age. The elder mare passed away at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky.
A home grown product of Ogden Phipps, Inside Information would go on to collect one of the most impressive records amongst her female compatriots. In 17 career races, she went 14-1-2 and never finished out of the money. In total, she won $1,614,806.
The bay yearling was born in May of 1991 and would make her debut as a two-year-old filly while racing in a pair of allowances. Breaking her maiden at Belmont and finishing 3rd at Aqueduct showed promise, but Phipps knew that he would need time to let her mature.
The slow build to her championship season began as a three-year-old where she would test the graded stakes waters vibrantly with wins in the 1994 Bonnie Miss and Ashland before falling to 3rd once again in her final, major race of the season. Inside Information would fall to Lakeway in the 1994 Mother Goose.
Her 1995 season was by far her best. A warmup at Keeneland produced an allowance victory and then it was on to the 1995 Shuvee, Monmouth Park Breeders’ Cup Handicap and Molly Pitcher where she continued to decimate her competition. Classy Marge would catch her at the wire to steal the Ballerina Stakes later that year, but Inside Information would roar on undeterred with victories in the Ruffian and Spinster Stakes before taking to the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
In her masterpiece performance, Inside Information stormed to the front of a talented field and set incredible fractions of :23.00, :45.90 and 1:09.42. By the homestretch, she had buried her rivals in dust as she unleashed an untouchable pace and crossed the wire in 1:46.15. To this very day, she holds the fastest time ever recorded in Breeders’ Cup Distaff history.
Due to her astonishing record, that only produced one loss, the five-year-old mare was awarded the 1995 Eclipse Award for Champion Older Mare. She was then retired and would produce Smuggler with 1990 Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Unbridled. Smuggler would win the 2005 American Champion Three Year Old Filly.
Inside Information was inducted in to the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame in 2008.
