The final round of the Kentucky Derby Futures Wager has been released, and for the second time Justify has earned honors as the favorite. Though he opened as a 6/1 top choice, bettors drilled him down to 3/1 by the end of the weekend. His win in the 2018 Santa Anita Derby has helped propel him to the top of the 2018 KDFW Pool 4 odds.
Justify has done well to – ahem – justify the hype surrounding him all season. He came crashing in to the third round of derby futures fueled by news surrounding his training alone, and now that he’s put his skills to the test on the track against stiff competition, there seems to be no stopping him.
Still it’s worth mentioning that six horses finished with single digit odds in the 2018 KDFW Pool 4 odds. That includes Bolt d’Oro, who has seen his stock slip mightily but retains 9/1 odds overall.
The second choice in the 2018 KDFW Pool 4 odds is Mendelssohn, who trampled the UAE Derby by a record 18 1/2 lengths and is still the highest earner of all the three-year-olds with over $1.9 million won already. He was a $3.0 million purchase as a yearling, so there’s some serious investment going on. Medelssohn has 5/1 odds.
Audible comes in at 7/1, Magnum Moon is 8/1 and Good Magic held fast at 8/1 thanks to his own victory in the Blue Grass.
Total action on the 2018 KDFW Pool 4 raked in at $543,010 which breaks up in to two areas with $339,036 in the Win pool and $203,974 in exactas. This represents a 23.3% increase from last year’s $440,511.
The most interesting part of the odds is that it is extremely top heavy. Those six aforementioned contenders all warrant merit, but the closest outsider to them didn’t even get ranked in the teens. Hofburg and Solomini each saw odds of 21/1 and 25/1 with the general “field” bet registering at 17/1. That basically means that this is a six-horse field despite so many potential entrants.
By almost everyone’s estimation, Justify and Mendelssohn are headed for a showdown that is about to be as memorable as it gets. The 2018 Kentucky Derby runs on Saturday, May 5th.
