Nyquist Will Treat Gold Cup Day Fans to a 5-Furlong Work Saturday
Earlier this month Nyquist returned to his home base at Santa Anita following some time in Baltimore after racing in the Preakness Stakes. The brilliant son of Uncle Mo and Kentucky Derby winner will return to the track for a five furlong work on Saturday, June 25 at Santa Anita. The bay will take to the track prior first post at 1:30 on Gold Cup day.
Trainer Doug O’Neill said he would watch how Nyquist trained in the coming days before reaching a decision with owner Paul Reddam about a goal race for the summer season.
“The horse is doing tremendous. He worked a half-mile last Friday and the timing for this work is perfect. Mario (Gutierrez) is going to breeze him and we’ll let him gallop out an extra eighth.”
Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby for his eighth straight win before his first defeat in the Preakness Stakes May 21. He’ll come through Santa Anita’s paddock prior to coming onto the main track via the tunnel just east of the winners circle.
“It’s Gold Cup Day at Santa Anita and (owner) Paul (Reddam) feels like this is a great opportunity to share Nyquist with all of our fans and to help promote the sport,” O’Neill said.
In nine career starts, Nyquist has earnings greater than $5.1 million. He’ll be prepared for the ultimate objective this year – running in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita November 5.
