Pic 6 Hits for $1M Sunday at Del Mar

Opening Fall Weekend Finishes with a Flourish and Huge Pick 6 Score of over $1 Million

One lucky bettor made a big score at Del Mar Sunday, hitting the Pick 6 for $1,041,696. The Big Crosby Autumn Season opened last Friday, and the Sunday card started with a $203,128 carryover from two misses in the Pick 6 Friday and Saturday. The ‘new’ money that chased after the Pick 6 was $1,225,589, and one bettor hit the coveted Pick 6 prize.

But that’s not all he took home. In September, Del Mar became the first Southern California race track to introduce a jackpot-style Pick 6. The ‘jackpot’ is only paid if there is a single ticket with six winners. So the bettor also cashed in and won the $183,828 that was in the jackpot pool.

del-mar-free-sundaysUnder a new rule approved in September by the California Horse Racing Board, instead of the track paying 85 percent of the net Pick 6 pool to those selecting all six winners and 15 percent to consolation tickets (with five winners), 70 percent will go to the former and 15 percent of the pool will be set aside into a “jackpot.” Consolation winners will continue to split the other 15 percent.

Del Mar’s mutuel department reported that the ticket was sold to a bettor through RGS (Racing Gaming Services), which is based on St. Kitts in the West Indies. The size of the ticket was not known.

Colonel Samsen paid $10.40 to win and created the massive Pick 6 payoff of over $1 million and the first ‘jackpot’ awarded this season.

Huge 1-9 favorite Enola Gray was upset in the eighth race as Chao Chom (8-1), ridden by Kent Desormeaux, overtook the favorite in the stretch to win the 7 furlong $100,000 feature Betty Grable Stakes.

The winning Pick 6 numbers were 4-10-11-3-5-2. The winning horses and jockey’s in the exotic wager were:

(4th Race) Boompa (rider Stewart Elliott) at $35; (5th Race) Eddie Haskell (Mario Gutierrez) at $12; (6th Race) Tiz Makin Memories (Jamie Theriot) at $9.20; (7th Race) Dynamic Mizzes K (Kent Desormeaux) at $20.40; (8th Race) Chao Chom (Desormeaux) at $19.80, and Colonel Samsen.

Del Mar’s 15-day Big Crosby Meet continues Thursday, Nov. 17 with race 1 post time at 12:30 local PT.
