Seabiscuit Handicap Highlights A Pair of Stakes Saturday at Del Mar
A pair of horses that ran in the Breeders’ Cup earlier this month at Santa Anita, Om and Vyjack, were entered to run in Saturday’s $200,000 Grade II Seabiscuit Handicap at 1 1/16 miles over Del Mar’s Jimmy Durante Turf Course. Om, who rallied from 13 lengths behind to lose by nose to Obviously in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, is the 5-2 morning-line favorite. Vyjack, seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, is the 3-1 second choice. What a View (7-2) is also entered, and he set the pace before fading to finish the last of 14 in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Vyjack was a half-length victor over Om in the City of Hope at Santa Anita on October 8. Those two rallied past the favorite Obviously as the second and third betting choices. Now they challenge again in a field of 8 with Argentine Horse of the Year Hi Happy (10-1) also one to watch.
Hi Happy is an undefeated 4-year-old colt who has won four group I races in his native country. The son of Pure Prize will make his first U.S. start and first for trainer Felipe Souza, but hasn’t raced since December, when he won the Gran Premio Internacional Carlos Pellegrini (Arg-I) at about 1 1/2 miles on turf.
Also entered in Ring Weekend (4-1), who finished 7th in the Breeders’ Cup Mile as a huge long shot. He won the Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2) at Saratoga in September as the favorite, and the Frank E. Kilroy Mile at Santa Anita last year with a big closing kick.
The field is completed by stakes winner A Red Tie Day, grade III-placed Hunt, and maiden winner Stylistics United.
Thursday’s Pick 6 on Thanksgiving at Del Mar had 81 winners, who cashed $4,385 each.
